Kapayapaan Kapatid Council (KKC) Tri-Youth Movement together with the SOCSARGEN Peace Network bring people together in an unconventional place near the christian-muslim community and marketplace to express their role as a youth in peace building through a PEACE CONCERT inspite of the warning from the military intelligence of the presence of bombers in the city as a result of the on-going armed confrontation of the government soldiers and the MILF in Maitum, Sarangani Province and the rain.

I. THE CONCEPT
The Kapayapaan Kapatid Council’s Tri-Youth Movement believes on the need to continue the support for the local youth sector for the genuine and participatory process of change to contribute to the larger challenge of peace and development in the community.
The Kapayapaan Kapatid Council with the help of the peace network aimed to strengthen the bond of all youth leaders in SOCSARGEN (South Cotabatao, Sarangani Province and General Santos City) area through a local youth concert for peace. KKC assumes that the local concert for peace is a beginning towards a more comprehensive, formal, and active youth movement in the area seeking for truth and justice to all issues the Philippines is facing.

II. GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
The activity dubbed as Youth for Peace: Healing the Land Concert aims at fostering culture of peace among the youth through a concert. The concert is a necessary instrument in keeping all levels of youth in the SARGEN Area whether youth leaders or the other way; schooled or not. The point of the Concert is to at least greater venue of awareness that the youth has a strong voice and re-building our nation. On the other hand, the concert also aims to gather and showcase the peace and development efforts of groups in the SARGEN area to greater population.
Specifically, the activity shall:

2) gather and re-activate the Tri-youth in SARGEN area; and
3) develop camaraderie towards peaceful understanding among Lumads, Moros,
and Christian Youth.

III. THE CONCERT

VISIONS OF HOPE, VOICES OF PEACE
The Invocation. “Disturb us O Lord from our comforts…”, mentioned in Mr. Trocio’s prayers as he challenged the participation of the youth in peace building for a better community.

Fr. Angel Buenavides soon welcomed the community by a simple yet dynamic statement – “Mabuhay and Kabataan! Mabuhay ang Kapayapaan! Mabuhay ang Kalikasan!”. This statement formally opened the peace concert.

The Kabpapagariya Ensemble of MSU showcased the cultural voices and dances of the Filipino during the opening production number. The 15 minutes show is a diverse powerhouse of music! Colorful costumes of the Moro and Lumad… power dances of the lumads and moro… heart warming blending of folk, acoustic and original compositions – their songs will have the audiences wanting to dance on this enchanting rhythm highlighted with flute and other indigenous musical instruments. Below are the original lyrics sung by the group.

LUPA
Ang lupa’y alay ng Diyos
Ang tao’y maglilingkod
At ditto sa lupa ay katiwala

Bundok at parang
Ilog at batis
Ang aking buhay
Dugo at pawis

Lalalalalalalalalalalala

Ang kulay ng lupa ay aking kulay
Pangalan ng lahi lupang nagbigay
Ang awit koy inaalay

Chrous:

ang aking lakas
ay bunga ng lupa
lahat ng ito
ay aly ni Bathala..

saan na ako, kuing ito’y mawala…

NAIS
Nais kong kumanta
Ng sariling musika
Sumabay sa tugtug
Ng sarili nating tunog

Nais kong sumayaw
Sumigaw at maiba
Lilipad sa buwan
Na ang pakpak ko ay sagwan

May awit ang hangin at mga dahon
Kumakanta ang dagat sa hampas ng alon
May awit ang langit at mga bituin
Kung tayoy may awitin,
Eh di awitin din natin

Tila araw ay nabibighani
Sumasayaw ang alon naitong sarangani
Ng bundok matutum ay mala-mutya
Dumadampi ang ulap sa maamo nyang mukha

BRIDGE TO PEACE THROUGH CONVERGENCE OF VARIOUS MUSIC

At least six various bands from different schools and organizations participated in the concert. They were 1) Kabpapagariya Ensemble of MSU 2) NDDU Band 3) PNP Band 4) Domican Youth Choir 5) Network Neigborhood Band 6) Las Kuridas. Collection of music from cultural, folk, reggae, inspiration and insertion of popular music made the concert lively and full of messages.

MESSAGES OF HOPE and CHALLENGES TOWARS PEACE
and THE ENVIRONMENT

The unusual format of the concert where “messages” from the tri-youth (Christian, Muslim & Lumad) and key people in the peace network made the event musical and inspirational in the topic of PEACE and ENVIRONMENT. Below were some messages captured from the speeches of the youth and one of the peace partners – the PNP:

1) Ms. Jocelyn Lambay, Muslim Youth & Peace Coordinator of Kalinaw Sarangani. She challenged the youth to work for peace and development. Working it with partners. The role such as working towards transformation on environment protection (as simple as planting a tree until it will be mature)… doing any activities not only using the mind but also with the heart. Youth will always be the hope of our land – “Ang kabataan ang Kinabukasan ng Inang Bayan – Jose Rizal”

2) Mark , Christian youth. “Youth has always a role in the community… towards peace and environment advocacies.” He shared some simple things the youth can contribute – can participate in the 20 days reading tutorials for the kids during summer, serving during election time, doing something on the “uling” operations that contributed to flash flood in Maitum, etc.

3) Ms. Joylyn Cabangag, Lumad Youth and MSU Secretary General of the Supreme Student Council. She started with a quotation from Mother Theresa – “A smile is the beginning of peace”. She also happily and publicly announced that she is a pure B’laan. She shares about 1) Peace is not just the absence of war 2) Peace is like reading… it can be learned 3) Peace = environment friendly 4) Peace… we have to work for it. She ended that in order to have peace in the community, we have to remember “DIALOGUE” as in: D (Dialogue), I (Integrity of Creation), A (Acceptance of culture), L (Love), O (Openness), G(Goodness to All), U (Understanding), and E (Equality)

4) Col. Poe, City Directory – PNP. His sharing started by appreciating the fantastic performance of the PNP band during the concert – “feel na feel” magkanta. That is also the essence of the work of PNP – feel na feel ang pagsasagawa ng tungkulin at responsibilidad, may malasakit sa trabaho inspite of the negative community impressions to them. He challenge the community, the “Generals” and the media to do the same. He mentioned that media has somewhat no sense of belongingness to city… they challenge also to highlight positive things in Gensan. The “Generals” must also have the sense of belongingness and be proud of being a “General”. Ang pag-unlad… like in Davao… will start from us – the Generals… may malasakit sa isa’t isa.

THE PLACE

The unconventional place was chosen by the youth organizers was in front of the Barangay Dadiangas Hall, near the public market and terminal, and near the Muslim community. This move was materialized to share the message of peace not only to the usual concert audience but also to the “masa”. During the concern, Dadiangas South community went in the place in shorts, slippers and even in sando. Jeepney and tricycle drivers stop and watched the concert. Balut and various mobile business vendors also joined the concert while selling their merchandise. The “usual” youth from the academe was joined by not only out of school youth but also various people living and passing the concert site.

THE PREPARATION.

The KKC Tri-Youth Movement do the preparation for two months. The preparations shows another cooperation of convergence. Convergence of talent and convergence of resources. This event was a venue for the youth to be one in the advocacy of peace.

During the concert, the rain did not stop the concert. It gave way to various youth to be one in reconstructing the stage and reprogrammed the event to achieve the same goal.

The concert did not stop because of the intelligence report on the peace situation of the city… it become an instrument to talked about the armed confrontation and talk about peace.

The meals were served to the technical working group wrapped in banana leaves and newspaper… a simple attempt to be environment friendly.
